The word sabotage is derived from the wooden “sabot” shoe, worn by French factory workers during the Industrial Revolution. It later became the icon for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).
Sabotage can be more broadly understood as any kind of deviation–walking too slowly, loudly, clumsily, badly, in the wrong direction, out of sync–a glitch that reveals the limits of a system that’s meant to function smoothly and efficiently.
